What to do with pears

September 16, 2009

When I went over to my boyfriend’s parents house they gave me a bag of pears. I decided I had to make something with them as there were so many we would still have some left over to eat. I decided against pie for turnovers.

I bought puff pastry. I made a poor attempt at making pear turnovers, they look ridiculous but they taste good. I ran out of dough so today I will make pear tarts with the rest of the filling. I am sure if I knew how to properly work with puff pastry I wouldn’t have left over filling to make use of but no matter, I am in need of a  challenge.

For the filling ( you could just add about 2-3 pears more and a pinch of everything else to make a pie)

  • 5 ripe pears peeled and diced into small cubes
  • 3/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 4 tbsps of butter
  • the juice of half an orange, or whatever citrus you prefer
  • 2 tsps vanilla
  • 2 tbsps flour
  • corn starch (optional)

Directions

1) Peel and dice your pears set aside

2) Put a pan on low heat with the butter in. Once the butter has melted add the brown sugar, mix well, then add citrus and vanilla. Stir in flour.Let simmer for a couple of minutes.

3)  Finally add pears. Add corn starch if you feel its necessary to thicken the syrup.

4) Throw it in some puff pastry, pie shell or tart shells. Put them in the oven.

Enjoy! I made up this recipe loosely based the peach pie recipe I recently posted on  here
